Your Questions About Foreclosures

John asks…

could lower manhattan fall into the hudson river?

k i was reading about them finding a boat that was used as a filler to extend lower manhatten into the hudson river. My question is, is there a possibility that lower manhattan could fall into the hudson river, even a small chance?

Your Questions About Foreclosures

The Expert answers:

If you had an earthquake, the fill would undergo through the process of liquefaction and settle. However, the chance of an earthquake strong enough to cause liquefaction in Manhattan is a VERY, VERY slim.

More dangerous is flooding caused by a large hurricane coming ashore just south of New York..

If you look at the map, the coasts of New Jersey and Long Island are at a right angle to each other, and form a kind of funnel. The storm surge will be amplified by the coastlines and may top the sea walls and flood the lower Manhattan, including all the underground communications and transportation infrastructure.

Robert asks…

I am first time boater wanting to go from freeport ny to hudson river on my rinker 230 bowrider.?

I am first time boater wanting to go from freeport ny to hudson river on my rinker 230 bowrider.
What dangers hsould i be aware off…i dont have a chart plotter…will ride with coast in site…do have a handheld VHF radio.
What websites should i check for marine weather conditions..any tips would help

Your Questions About Foreclosures

The Expert answers:

I would suggest a fixed VHF as your handheld does not have the reception to keep track of the traffic in New York Harbor. Keep track of what vessels are in the area that you may encounter. You will not be very visible to commercial vessels unless it is very calm. Get a chart well beforehand and plan your trip to stay well clear of the traffic lanes. There are some shoals and wrecks marked on the chart along the route. You should be able to do DR tracks and obtain fixes along the route in case inclement weather or fog obscures visibility. Study the chart well in advance of your trip so you know what to expect. Do not rely on site such as this for your knowledge. Get a chart, study, study, study. Anytime you head to sea your route should be as familiar as possible to avoid problems.

Ken asks…

Is it ridiculous that hundreds of people called 911 when a plane crashed into the hudson river?

I mean seriously, it’s not like the pilot can’t communicate with air traffic control or the co pilot. ” 911 what’s your emergency ? ” ” uh a plane is about to crash into the Hudson river” ” Ok thank you , we had NO IDEA ! ” Is there not just some situations where you have to use common sense?

Your Questions About Foreclosures

The Expert answers:

Ridiculous? No.
Civic duty? Yes.

People who called 9-1-1 had no way of knowing if the plane’s radios were working or not.
They had no way of knowing if the plane’s flight crew were alive, dead or unconscious.
They had no idea who was in control of the aircraft. (Pilots, someone else, or nobody).
Etc and etc.
Meaning the proper and correct course of action was for people to report the incident to authorities.

What’s ridiculous is your thinking otherwise.
